Title: Notes for a History of Lead
Author: William H. Pulsifer
Publisher: D. Van Nostrand
Printing Year: 1888 First Edition, Signed by the Author

Details/Condition: Bound in its original blindstamped burgundy cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce early metallurgy title, with an inscription by the author. The title continues, "and an inquiry into the development of the manufacture of white lead and lead oxides." The inscription is located at the top of the title page and reads, "Prof. A. L. Frothingham Jr., with the compliments of W. H. Pulsifer." A period bookplate reveals the recipient to have been Arthur L. Frothingham, Jr. and we believe this to have been Arthur Lincoln Frothingham, Jr., Ph. D. (1859 - 1923), who was an early professor of art history at Princeton University and an archaeologist. Frothing ham was published several times including The Monuments of Christian Rome from Constantine to the Renaissance (1925), A Text-Book of the History of Sculpture (1896), A History of Architecture (1906-15, in four volumes), and Architecture, Mythology, the Fine Arts, Technology (1887, published as volume four of "Iconographic Encyclopedia of Science, Literature, and Art").
The volume shows some external age/wear concentrated at the extremities, and is solidly bound with bright pages and library markings. The book measures approximately 7" x 10.25" and contains 389 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50
