Title: NEKPOKHΔEIA: or, the Art of Embalming
Author: Thomas Greenhill
Publisher: Thomas Greenhill
Printing Year: 1705

Details/Condition: Bound in modern green cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce early Egyptology title. The title page continues: "Wherein is shewn The Right of Burial, and Funeral Ceremonies, especially that of Preserving Bodies after the Egyptian Method. Together with an account of the Egyptian Mummies, Pyramids, Subterranean Vaults and Lamps, and their Opinion of the Metempsychosis, the Cause of their Embalming. As also a geographical description of Egypt, the Rise and Course of the Nile, the Temper, Constitution and Physic of the Inhabitants, their Inventions, Arts, Sciences, Stupendous Works and Sepulchres, and other curious Observations any ways relating to the Physiology and Knowledge of this Art." The work is illustrated with 14 engravings (including the frontispiece), two of which are fold-outs, and a folding map of Egypt and surrounding areas. All illustrations are present in this copy.
"Greenhill's central purpose was to reverse the decline of embalming by advocating its restoration within aristocratic burial practices, and by making it the exclusive preserve of surgeons, rather than undertakers and quacks. He proceeded as an antiquary, making his theological, historical, and anthropological arguments with extensive reference to classical texts, patristics, and the scriptures. The work …. offers rich evidence on attitudes to death, of early eighteenth-century antiquarianism and Egyptology, and the medical politics of the day, in an accessible and interesting blend." (ODNB).
The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound. Internally the book is bright with a very small amount of scattered toning/foxing, the illustrations are all intact, there is wear to the outside edge of the map, and the book bears a few library markings though it circulated very little if at all, and has been very well cared for. The book measures approximately 7.75" x 9.75" and contains 367 pages followed by a catalog and table (index). Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50
